Shift operations manager

If you’ve already worked as a leader in a manufacturing, processing, distribution or retail business or have looked after large teams in a complex operation you’ll find this is a far more exciting and challenging environment. You’ll keep the whole place running like clockwork. A typical day could look like this:

  • Plan and oversee day to day operations
  • Lead and develop your first line management team
  • Creating and delivering business plan
  • Ensure every opportunity is taken to develop your team
  • Accountable as duty manager


In this high profile role that’s central to the smooth-running of our Processing Centres, you’ll plan and oversee day-to-day operations at one of our sites to reach its objectives, with a particular focus on developing talent, upskilling and coaching every member your team.

You’ll look to your First Line managers to see that the site achieves daily production targets, which will mean providing guidance, structure and support. You’ll have overall responsibility for your own department too – from creating and developing the business plan, to making sure it achieves our desired standard operating procedures and delivers its SLAs.

There are many aspects to the role such as identifying shrink risks and contributing to the day-to-day operational strategy. You’ll partner with specialist colleagues to implement initiatives for continuous improvement.

Above all, you’ll be accountable as duty manager – the first point of contact and the decision-maker for any and all operational issues. Creating and promoting a supportive working atmosphere will be a big part of that.


You will be instrumental in the development of your teams to make the site successful. You will do this by defining recruitment, training and succession needs of your team according to the business plan you’ve set out.

However, your key responsibility will be to inspire and lead your teams to do a great job everyday. You will also be expected to identify, nurture and develop Talent at all levels to make sure the business builds a pipeline of future leaders.

What we look for

  • Proven leadership experience within a similar size manufacturing, processing or distribution or any background where you have led and motivated large teams in a complex and operational environment
  • High levels of skill at identifying and developing Talent
  • Proven knowledge of Health & Safety and legal requirements
  • Ability to interpret what data means and apply it in a practical way
  • An understanding of how to get the best out of large teams and how to build a positive working environment
  • Ability to coach, lead and motivate large team to deliver results
  • Experience of working within set budgetary and performance targets
  • Adaptability and self-awareness
  • Ability to make quick decisions based on evaluation of risks and possible impact but also know when to consult and involve
  • Ability to influence at all levels
